Atlas 5



The Atlas V family is designed to lift payloads up to nearly 8700 kg to geosynchronous transfer orbit (GTO). It was developed both for ILS commercial missions and to meet the U.S. Air Force requirements for the Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (EELV).

Atlas V launch vehicles have a structurally stable booster stage powered by the Russian-built RD-180 engine system, the first variable-thrust main engine to power a U.S. expendable launch vehicle (was flight-proven by AC201 in May 2000). The structurally stable booster stage also has provisions for the addition of between one and five strap-on solid rocket boosters. The Atlas CCB (Common Core Booster) is 3.80-meter diameter and 32-m long stage. In Jul 2018, the RD-180 engines were certified for manned flights by NASA and USAF. The use of RD-180 engines is due to cease in the mid-2020s.

The Atlas V is to ultimately replace all current versions of Atlas and Titan launch systems in operation.

The Vehicle designator has 3 figures: The first one is the usage fairing diameter (4 or 5 m), the second is the number of solid boosters attached (0 to 5) and the third figure is the number of Centaur engines (1 or 2).

In 2019 a new GEM 63 strap-on booster motor should make its start, followed later by the GEM 63XL.
