Minotaur

Minotaur is the result of the transformation of the 2 first stages of a Minuteman II rocket with the third and fourth stage derived from the Pegasus. The launcher is integrated by Orbital Science Corp. (OSC) for the USAF. The launcher is also called the OSP Space Launch Vehicle.

The first and second stages of the vehicle are the M-55A1 and SR-19 Minuteman II rocket motors respectively. The third and fourth stages are the Orion 50 XL and Orion 38 Pegasus rocket motors respectively.

Version 1 deliver 340 kg in polar orbit.

The cost of the first Minotaur launch is $23 million, future launches should only cost $13 million. It was also the first launch from the first privately-owned commercial spaceport in the United States, operated by Spaceport Systems International (SSI), a limited partnership of ITT Industries, Inc. and California Commercial Spaceport. SSI was selected to provide commercial payload processing, range and launch site services for the Orbital/Suborbital programme Space Launch Vehicle (OSPSLV) JAWSAT mission in June 1998.

Minotaur 4, introduced in 2010, is capable of launching payloads up to 1830 kg in LEO.

Minotaur 5 is a 5-stage rocket built and operated for the US Air Force. It uses 3 old Peacekeeper booster stages with commercial motors (ATK Star 48V and Star 37FM solid motors) for the 2 upper stages.
