Program: Heao
High Energy Astronomy Observatory
American scientific program made of 3 large observatories designed to study the
"high energy universe," i.e., X-rays, gamma rays, and cosmic particles.
The scientific objectives of the HEAO program were to learn more about some of
the most puzzling objects in the universe: pulsars, neutron stars, black holes,
quasars, radio galaxies, and supernovas. Many of these radiate only in the
X-ray, gamma ray, and cosmic ray regions of the electromagnetic spectrum and
cannot be studied from the ground.
