Will be used for power enforcement.

On 4 May 2002, the main SCP died and the control was transfered to the backup one. The satellite will now be used only as a on-orbit backup.

It was removed from service in Oct 2002 and sent to a storage orbit. It was recalled in Sep 2003 and leased to Telesat Canada till 31 Dec 2006 to provide backup of Nimiq 2. There are plans to use it colocated with Nimiq 1 in order to broadcast some channels in high power mode.
