Cause Destroyed by a test of an anti satellite weapon Chinese. A missile launched from Xichang with a kinetic kill vehicle hit the satellite. The satellite's orbit was apparently adapted to facilitate the test, and everything on board that could be switched on was switched on, including transmitters.
Decay A large number of fragments have resulted from the destruction. At least 3400 have been cataloged. Due to their high orbit, a large number of them will still be up there in 20 years.
