Galaxy 10R

General

Designation 26056 / 00002A
Launch date 25 Jan 2000
Country of origin United States
Mission Telecommunications
Geostationary orbit 123°W
Launch vehicle Ariane V126

Tested at 127°W during Feb 2000

The full XIPS system failed in Jul 2004. The satellite's lifetime is only around 3 years from this date as a non-inclined satellite. An insurance claim was filled and $75.3 million were returned.
Galaxy 17 should replace it.

End of life

Out of service Jun 2008
Cause Moved to the junk orbit

First use of the LAE of Kaiser Marquardt of Van Nuys, CA USA; it is aimed to boost the satellite in GEO from GTO. It consumes monomethyl hydrazine and nitrogen tetroxide. Because it uses advanced materials, the new, high-performance engine operates about 700 degrees Fahrenheit hotter than conventional satellite engines, resulting in greater propellant efficiency and higher performance. It provides a specific impulse of approximately 322 seconds as compared to the 315 seconds provided by standard apogee motors.

XIPS propulsion.
