Was an experimental Ka-band satellite. It comprised 8 channels each of Ka-band regenerative and bent-pipe payloads, besides a navigation payload using CXL and CXC links. With digital connectivity on board. Also had a Ku-band capacity.

Also had an L-band payload for GAGAN (GPS Aided Geo Augmented Navigation) system.

Was also to test electric ion thrusters, and a 70-volt power bus.
