In May 1998 the satellite was leased to Australian Defence Force (Royal Australian Navy) for up to 5 years. The satellite was relocated at 156°E.

Leasat 5 began limited service to the Australian Defence Force on Oct. 17, 1997. The PanAmSat Operations Center in Long Beach, Calif. provided the tracking, telemetry, and control capability via its Guam ground station.

Was bought by Panamsat G2 in 2003.
