Previously known as NOAA K, also known as POES 1 (Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite)

Launch date 13 May 1998
Country of origin United States
Mission Meteorology
Perigee/Apogee 833 km (sunsynchronous)
Inclination 98.7°

This is the first in a series of five satellites called POES with improved imaging and sounding capabilities. This satellite replaced NOAA 12

After launch, the satellite had problems to deploy one of its antennas. The APT transmissions are disturbed. Seems to be related to an assembly miswire. Nevertheless, high resolution transmissions are operational.

In early July 2000; the imaging instrument appeared to have failed.
