Phase 3D

Also called Amsat Oscar 40, AO-40

General

Designation 26609 / 00072D
Launch date 16 Nov 2000
Country of origin Germany
Mission Telecommunications
Perigee/Apogee 355 / 58974 km
Inclination 6.2°
Period
Launch vehicle Ariane V135_v135

Several problems occured right after launch, noticeably with the 70 cm transmitter, the IHU-2 and the 400-newton motor (helium valve stuck). On 13 Dec 2000, the satellite went silent. It came back up on 25 Dec 2000 after a hard reset sent in L-band. The computer crash may be caused by hard radiation that the satellit encounters in transfert orbit.

A leak is suspected to explain to higher than normal spin rate.

On 27 Jan 2004 the satellite went silent when a battery failed. Consequences should be serious.
