The spacecraft carried NRL's FUVIS Far Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrograph which will be used to study the Shuttle environment and make astronomical observations. This is the first Spartan mission to be sponsored by the USAF Space Test Program rather than NASA. It made about 40 hours of observation of Galactic dust clouds.
