Started serving on 1st December 1995. Was insured for $141 million.

A Canadian company, Tee-Comm Electronics, created AlphaStar in March 1995 by leasing more than half the 24 Ku-band transponders on Telstar 402R. The new service to 61-cm home antennas, offers 110 television and 20 audio channels. It will be expanded to over 200 channels in 1997 using Telstar 5. Customers in Alaska and Hawaii will also be served via slightly larger (76-cm) antennas.

The satellite was renamed Telstar 4 after the loss of Telstar 401

In Jul 2003, this satellite (with others) is sold to Intelsat as Loral Space & Communications Ltd reorganises. FCC approved.
