Agile
Astro-rivelatore Gamma a Immagini LEggero
Agile is an astronomical satellite of the Italian Space Agency (ASI), Rome. The
satellite carries scientific instruments capable of studying distant celestial
objects in X-ray and Gamma ray regions of the electromagnetic spectrum.
Part of ASI's Program for Small Scientific Missions. Will replace
Beppo/SAX
As the payload has a total mass of only 535 kg, the rocket flew without the
usual six strap-on boosters. As a consequence, the cost of the launch was
INR680 million (EUR11.9 million, US$15.9 million) instead of the INR800 million
(EUR14.0 million, US$18.8 million) for a standard launch.
The US complained that Italy re-exported classified US defence technology to
India.

Will observe gamma ray source with a great field of view (approx. 1/5 of the
sky).
The satellite will downlink some data through
Orbcomm
when no earth-station is reachable.
