Its propulsion device (IUS) didn't work. The satellite reached the geostationary orbit by himself, using much of his propellant.

Still partially operational for its 20th anniversary, provides communication services to the South Pole stations.

On 3 Feb 1997 a failure occured on 1 of the gyros. The traffic was taken over be TDRS 6
