Mabuhay 1

Called Agila 2 after successful launch, later ABS 5, later ABS 3

General

Designation 24901 / 97042A
Launch date 19 Aug 1997
Country of origin Philippines
Mission Telecommunications
Geostationary orbit 146°E
Launch vehicle Long March #44

Cost: $230 million. Two transponders are owned by PT Pasifik Satelit Nusantara

Was not delivered in the exact orbit and had to burn extra fuel to move 3000 km. The lifetime is said not to have been reduced by this operation.

The planned location was 144°E, but there are interference problems in Ku-band with nearby Superbird C satellite. Despite the move, only 18 transponders can be activated in Ku-band.

Loral has access to some Ku-band transponders via a joint venture between Loral Space & Communications and MPSC.

Renamed ABS 5 in Nov 2009 after company takeover. Went inclined in March 2011.
